Country Guide – Where Can You Access Private Company Financial Data

If you work in compliance, credit risk, PE due diligence, or procurement — and you deal with companies across borders — you've hit this wall before. You need to evaluate a company's financial health, but you don't know whether that country even requires private companies to file financial statements. And if they do file, you don't know whether the data is publicly accessible, how much it costs, or what you'll actually get.
This is the reference guide we wish existed when we started building MonetaIQ.
We've mapped the financial disclosure landscape across 91 countries — every EU member state, every major economy in Asia-Pacific, the Americas, and the Middle East. For each country, we answer five questions:
  • What's the registry called? The actual name of the government body that holds company data.
  • What financial data points are available? Full P&L? Balance sheet only? Just entity data?
  • What's free and what's paid? Exact costs per document, not vague "varies by jurisdiction" language.
  • Who has to file? Which entity types are covered, which are exempt.
  • What's missing? The practical gaps you'll hit when you actually try to use the data.
The picture is not what most people assume. Europe is deeply transparent — every EU member state requires limited liability companies to file annual financial statements, and several countries (UK, Belgium, Denmark, Hungary, Slovakia) provide free access. The US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, and most of Latin America and the Middle East offer no public access to private company financials whatsoever. And then there's a middle tier — countries like Singapore, Australia, and China — where the rules exist on paper but the reality of what you can actually access is far more limited than the headlines suggest.
This guide is designed to be bookmarked and referenced. Use the A–Z index below to jump directly to any country.
At a Glance: Financial Disclosure by Region
Before diving into 91 individual country profiles, here is the high-level picture. The table below shows how many countries in each region provide full public access to private company financial statements, how many offer partial or restricted access, and how many provide no access at all.
Region Countries Full Access Partial No Access Best Free Sources
Europe 44 30 12 2 UK (Companies House), Belgium (NBB), Denmark (CVR.dk), Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia
Asia-Pacific 17 5 8 4 India (MCA — INR 100), New Zealand (free entity data)
Americas 16 3 6 7 Colombia (SuperSociedades — free), Ecuador (SCVS — free), Brazil (partial via CVM)
Middle East & Africa 14 1 7 6 South Africa (CIPC — ZAR 30), Kenya (partial via eCitizen)
Total 91 39 33 19 43% of countries provide full access
Key insight: Europe alone accounts for 30 of the 39 countries with full financial disclosure. If your compliance or credit risk workflow depends on private company financials, European-headquartered subsidiaries are often your best path to data — even for US or Asian parent companies.

Europe
The EU Accounting Directive requires every limited liability company across all 27 member states to file annual financial statements. This makes Europe the most transparent region globally for private company financial data. Six countries provide completely free access: the UK (Companies House), Belgium (National Bank), Denmark (CVR.dk), Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia (FINA). The rest charge between €1 and €30 per document. Non-EU European countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Serbia, Ukraine) vary widely — some match EU transparency levels, while others (Monaco, Liechtenstein, Belarus) are significantly more restricted.

What's missing: Data quality and completeness vary. Digitisation ongoing.
The pattern: Europe and India offer the deepest, most accessible private company financial data. The US, Canada, Hong Kong, and Japan offer none. Switzerland is notably opaque despite its financial centre status. The rest falls in between — with coverage depending on company size, entity type, and whether you're looking at a free zone or mainland entity.
Frequently Asked Questions
The UK. Companies House provides free access to all filed accounts for every limited company, including bulk CSV and XBRL downloads. Belgium and Denmark also offer free access to filed financial statements.
Not through government filings. Alternatives include SEC Form D, UCC filings, state regulatory filings for regulated industries, commercial credit bureaus, and checking European subsidiary filings for companies with international operations.
No. Hong Kong companies file annual returns but financial statements are not included in the public filing. They are accessible only to shareholders.
INR 100 (approximately $1.20) per company per year through the MCA portal. Company master data is free.
Yes. The EU Accounting Directive requires all limited liability companies across all member states to file annual financial statements. Detail varies by company size.
Full accounts include P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, notes, and reports. Abridged accounts typically include only a balance sheet and limited notes — no revenue or detailed expenses.
No. German registries and filings are in German only. Data providers like MonetaIQ normalise filings into structured, language-neutral formats.
Yes. If a US company has a UK, German, or French subsidiary, that subsidiary's financial statements are publicly available through the respective registry.
Limited. Most Pte Ltds qualify as exempt private companies — their financials are filed but not publicly accessible. Non-exempt companies have a financial profile available for SGD 50.
For filing jurisdictions, MonetaIQ goes directly to registries and normalises the data. For companies in non-filing markets (US, Canada, HK), MonetaIQ provides financial data on their international subsidiaries operating in mandatory-filing jurisdictions.
The UK (Companies House), Belgium (National Bank of Belgium), Denmark (CVR.dk), Hungary, Slovakia, and Croatia (FINA RGFI) all provide free access to filed financial statements. Norway provides free entity data but charges for financial documents.
Beneficial ownership (UBO) data identifies the natural persons who ultimately own or control a company. The UK, Denmark, and Ukraine make this data publicly accessible. Germany, France, and several other EU countries restricted public UBO access following the 2022 European Court of Justice ruling, though access remains available to obliged entities.
It varies significantly. The UK typically shows filings within days of submission, but companies have 9 months after year-end to file (6 months for public companies). German companies can take up to 12 months. In practice, the most recent financials available are usually 12–18 months old. French filings typically appear 2–4 months after submission to the RCS.
Entity registration data is available through MOHRE (UAE) and the Ministry of Commerce (Saudi Arabia), but financial statements are not publicly filed or accessible for private companies. Free zone authorities in the UAE maintain their own registries but also do not disclose financials. Listed companies disclose financials through their respective stock exchanges.
Colombia. SuperSociedades operates the SIREM portal, which provides free access to financial statements for all supervised companies. Ecuador’s SCVS portal is also free. Brazil’s CVM covers publicly traded and regulated companies but not the broader private sector.
Before 2022, Russia was relatively transparent — Rosstat provided public access to financial data for millions of companies via bo.nalog.ru. Since then, many companies have been removed from public disclosure in response to international sanctions. EGRUL still provides free entity data (INN, OGRN, directors), but financial data access is now inconsistent and many records have been restricted.
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a standardised format for financial reporting that makes data machine-readable. The UK, Denmark, and several Nordic countries support XBRL filing. This means financial data can be extracted, compared, and analysed programmatically — unlike PDF filings from countries like France or Germany, which require manual parsing or OCR.
Yes, several. Singapore requires financial statements to be filed with ACRA, but most exempt private companies’ financials are not publicly visible. Japan requires tax filings but these are not publicly accessible. In Australia, small proprietary companies file with ASIC but are exempt from public access requirements. This is a common pattern — filing exists for regulatory compliance, but public transparency is not the goal.
Countries report under different accounting frameworks — IFRS, local GAAP, or simplified standards for smaller companies. MonetaIQ normalises filings by mapping local chart-of-accounts fields to a standardised schema, so you can compare a German GmbH with a UK Ltd or a French SAS using consistent financial line items. Each record retains a data stamp showing the original source and filing standard.
The biggest change is the UK’s Companies House Reform Act. From April 2027, small companies will be required to file P&L accounts and director’s reports — abridged and filleted accounts will no longer be an option. This will dramatically increase the depth of UK private company financial data. The EU is also working on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which will require ESG disclosures from a much larger set of companies starting in 2025–2026.
